COVID-19 Statement – 17/03/2020: In light of yesterday’s updates from the Scottish Government and the UK Government regarding delaying the spread of Coronavirus (COVID19), Fèis Rois has decided to  move all of its programmes online until further notice.

Weekly Classes Online 2021

We’re are delighted to offer an exciting programme of online classes for our final term of the year (May – June) 2021.

    These classes are aimed at brand new learners of these instruments: absolutely no experience necessary! Over the course of the 6 sessions, participants will get to know their new instrument through fun, games and learning. Free instrument hire is included with each of our ‘Introduction to’ classes too! It’s the perfect opportunity for young ones to try something new, without the commitment of buying an instrument.

  • Scots Song with Iain Hyslop
    We’re delighted to welcome Iain Hyslop onto our tutor team this term to teach Scots Songs for young people aged 11yrs +. Iain will be teaching how to sing some classic Scots songs, and their history.

Levels

We are offering classes in the following levels:

  • Introduction to – you will have little or no experience of playing your chosen instrument, but keen to give it a go!
  • Post Beginners – you will have a little experience of playing your chosen instrument and have attended classes previously, or had some lessons in a school or private setting.
  • Improvers – you will have been playing for 6 – 12 months and have a basic understanding of technique and a few tunes under your belt.
  • Intermediate – you will have been playing for 1 – 2 years and know a good number of tunes, songs, dances or steps.
  • Advanced – you will have been playing for a minimum of 2 years and have a good grasp of your instrument. You will know different kinds of tunes, dances, songs or steps. You will be starting to use Gracenotes.

We want to make sure that you have all the information you need before your child starts a class here at Fèis Rois. If you don’t find the information you are looking for below then please contact our Community Engagement Officer.

A big part of the Fèis Rois weekly class programme is to help support young people to build their confidence and skills to perform in the community. We offer a small number of one-to-one sessions for young people as part of our weekly classes. Get in touch with our Community Engagement Officer to find out more.

We hold community ceilidhs locally at the end of the June term when family and friends are invited to come along to listen to the classes performing. Often there are other opportunities to perform in the community at fundraisers or family events.

How much do classes cost?

Please note: these prices are for the 2019-20 academic year and are for reference only.

2019-2020
1 class: £240 for the full year, or by standing order for 10 months at £24
2 classes: £450 for the full year, or by standing order for 10 months at £45
3 classes: £650 for the full year, or by standing order for 10 months at £65

We offer discounts for siblings and family members; this works the same as the multi-class rate above.

Can I just turn up?

No. It’s important that we have all your emergency contact details and any information regarding special circumstances and additional support needs before your child joins our classes. If we don’t have this information we can’t accept your child in the class.

I don’t have my own instrument, does that matter?

No, it doesn’t matter as you are welcome to hire one. Fèis Rois has an instrument bank of around 100 instruments. Find out more about instrument hire.

Whether you are starting from scratch or polishing your skills, we have well respected musicians on hand to help you in a relaxed and fun environment. Everyone is welcome at our classes and if you can’t find something suitable for you, then get in touch and we’ll see if we can help.

We also have some sessions available if you’d prefer to play tunes rather than learn in a more structured class environment. In addition to the classes, there may be opportunities for you to perform through the year if you would like to and we hold a Christmas social event for all class members too.

Our classes run for 30 weeks between August 2019 and June 2020, closely following the school year.

Please note, we do not run classes during weeks of in-service.

We organise end of term concerts for all classes to enable family, friends and loved ones to celebrate the growth and learning that’s developed over the year.

Adult Classes
Christmas Session
Friday 13th December 2019
Tulloch Castle, 7pm
We invite our adult classes to come together for an informal session with tunes a-plenty, and mince pies a-many! All levels welcome.

Fortrose Classes (Cancelled)
Tuesday 26th March 2020
Resolis Hall, Resolis  6pm
We ask participants to arrive at the hall for 5.30pm to tune up. The concert should last about an hour, there will be tea & coffee served afterwards. Donations of home-baking and raffle prizes are most welcome.

Kiltearn Classes (Cancelled)
Thursday 25th June 2020
Diamond Jubilee Hall, Evanton  6pm
We ask participants to arrive at the hall for 5.30pm to tune up. The concert should last about an hour, there will be tea & coffee served afterwards. Donations of home-baking and raffle prizes are most welcome.

Ullapool Classes (Cancelled)
Monday 22nd June 2020
Ullapool Primary School, during usual class times
Parents and carers are welcome to pop in to their child’s class and listen to a couple tunes. The classes will run at the normal times, tea & coffee will be served in the canteen. Our Community Engagement Officer will be there to chat about the year and gather any feedback you might have.
