Kiltearn Fiddlers perform at Diamond Jubilee Hall in Evanton.

Kiltearn Fiddlers

The Kiltearn Fiddlers is a performance group with predominantly fiddles, but all instruments are welcome! The group emerged from the Fèis Rois weekly classes, which used to be held in Kiltearn Primary School in Evanton before they moved to Dingwall, hence the name, Kiltearn Fiddlers!

In 1990, Alpha Munro, who taught weekly fiddle classes for Fèis Rois for 30 years, formed the group to improve the performance skills, repertoire and confidence of young fiddle players in Ross-Shire.

Fast forward to 2024 and Lauren MacColl, who was a member of the Kiltearn Fiddlers during her school days, now leads the group.

We offer monthly workshops for young players of traditional music who are in P6 to S6. The sessions are completely free to attend and are aimed at intermediate and advanced players. It’s a great chance to learn new music, hone your skills and meet new people! The workshops take place on the first Sunday of the month in the Dingwall Community Centre. There are two groups on offer, depending on your current level and age:

Intermediate | 12pm – 2pm
This is open to young people from P6 to S6. You should be comfortable playing a wide range of traditional tunes up to speed and you will be ready to learn more about harmony, chords and arranging.
Advanced (Kiltearn Fiddlers) | 12pm – 2pm
This is open to young people of secondary school age only. You will already have some performance experience and should feel comfortable bringing arrangement ideas to the group. The advanced group will get opportunities to perform at local events in Ross-Shire.
