Interplay aims to enable individuals in custody to develop their music making skills as well as their skills for life, learning and work. The project began in April 2017 with the support of Creative Scotland’s ‘Access to Music Making’ fund and we are looking forward to developing this work in 2018.

We have an amazing team of musicians teaching on the project: Amy Henderson, Dave Martin, Findlay Napier and Monica Neeling. Fèis Rois have also employed a Trainee Musician, Liam Ross, a student at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Activity has varied from week-long residencies to regular weekly sessions, gigs and family visit workshops. We have engaged men from all three of the prison’s population groups to date: remand, convicted and protected. From one-to-one tuition to group work sessions in keyboard, ukulele, guitar and accordion, we have also worked to include elements of electronic music and sound recording.

I knew nothing of Scotland’s music. But straight away I saw the accordion and wanted to play it…Whilst I’m here, I am trying to make the most of my time.
